Lilian Maus is an artist/researcher and cultural manager, born in Salvador – Bahia, Brazil. She currently resides and works between the cities of Porto Alegre, Osório and Recife. She’s currently a candidate for a doctorate in Visual Poetics from PPGAV – Arts Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), where she has already obtained a Masters in Art History, Theory and Criticism. From the same University, she has also obtained a B.A. in Plastic Arts and a B.Ed. in Visual Arts. As a researcher she writes for art magazines and manages publications, such as the book “The Ladies Have the Floor: dialogues on the inclusion of women in visual arts”, in which she worked together with Isabel Waquil, the interviewer. She has been working as a cultural manager for the past nine years, focusing on her work at the independent artistic space known as Atelier Subterrânea from 2006 until 2015. She has also given talks and taught workshops both in Brazil and abroad.

“In my artistic process I explore the porous surface of language: its ditches, hazes, webs, textures, matrixes and ruins. I walk across certain breathing patterns, stumbling on hiccups, mumbling names to places and time. The games with Eros are present throughout the entire process, bringing in the strength of union, the fusion of the dissimilar, as if desire were to shoot arrows through the senses to create the webs that redesign environments, reuniting memories as they delineate the space with images and words. I enjoy going from drawing to writing, painting to photography, video to installations, breaking with the homogenous nature of categorization. I have been embracing the challenge of denominating what escapes me, combining words and images, language and environment, cultivating a grammar for the landscape that is slippery and uncertain, not unlike the blot of ink on the paper that’s caused by a pen that hesitates following thoughts.”
